EUROPEAN HYDROGEN WEEK 2025

H2GreenFUTURE project presented in Brussels as part of scientific and technological achievements in the field of hydrogen technology development

On Monday, September 29, 2025, Slovenia presented its scientific and technological achievements in the field of hydrogen technologies at the event “Showcasing Slovenia’s and Flanders’ Hydrogen Technology Research Landscapes” in Brussels. As an example of good practice in the development of hydrogen technologies, the event featured the H2GreenFUTURE project, which addresses the challenges in the process of developing hydrogen technologies for the transition to a carbon-neutral society in the Interreg area between Slovenia and Austria. The event also featured the HyBReED program, which deals with the resilient chemical energy storage with hydrogen and batteries.

The event was organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Brussels in cooperation with the National Institute of Chemistry during the 4th European Hydrogen Week (EHW), which took place in Brussels from 29 September to 3 October 2025. EHW is the central European event in the field of hydrogen technologies that brings together key players from politics, industry, and research institutions who works towards decarbonization and the transition to a sustainable energy future.

The event at the Embassy was opened by H.E. Ambassador Barbara Sušnik, and Ms. Valérie Bouillon-Delporte, Executive Director of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, who during her address to the audience also said: “As hydrogen technologies have rapidly advanced across Europe, we are witnessing a pivotal shift from isolated demonstrations to integrated, cross-border systems that can deliver clean, reliable energy at scale. Slovenia’s strong research base and growing industrial expertise are already making a tangible contribution to this transformation. Overall, the JU has supported Slovenian beneficiaries with about €18.7 million, an investment that not only strengthens Slovenia’s domestic capabilities but also enriches the whole European innovation ecosystem. Slovenian partners participate in four of the 21 Clean Hydrogen JU-funded hydrogen valleys, and their leading role in the North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley — where nine Slovenian beneficiaries receive roughly €10.27 million of a ~€25 million grant — demonstrates how local know-how can amplify regional impact. By leveraging their research excellence, skilled workforce and strategic geographic position, Slovenian stakeholders are well placed to help develop and scale innovative hydrogen solutions, foster cross-border value chains and accelerate Europe’s transition to climate-neutral energy systems.”

EVROPSKI TEDEN VODIKA 2025

The event featured presentations by numerous Slovenian and Belgian actors from politics, industry, and research institutions, including:

  • The National Institute of Chemistry with its new Center for Development, Demonstration and Training for Carbon-Free Technologies,
  • The Jozef Stefan Institute,
  • Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana,
  • Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Energy of the Republic of Slovenia,
  • Slovenian Business and Research Association (SBRA),
  • WaterstofNet platform from Belgium,
  • Procesni inženiring d.o.o. company from Slovenia,
  • Start-up company ReCatalyst from Slovenia,
  • Exion Hydrogen company from Belgium,
  • Bekaert company from Belgium.

The event provided an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between Slovenia and Belgium and to exchange good practices in the field of hydrogen technologies. European Hydrogen Week 2025 has once again demonstrated that Slovenia plays an important role in the European research area in the field of hydrogen and that its innovations contribute to the development of sustainable energy solutions. The next European Hydrogen Week will take place next year between October 26 and 30, 2026, at Brussels Expo near the Atomium. We look forward to seeing you there!
